The Common Core State Standards and a preview of the next generation of assessments have provided an opportunity to examine the level of rigor that is currently being taught and evaluated in our classrooms. This course talks through some of the natural steps that an educator would take when developing assessment items to meet the depth of knowledge that a student needs in order to be proficient on those standards and, in backward design fashion, how those more rigorous assessment items will impact instruction. The information, activities, and ideas referenced throughout the course are adapted from many assessment resources including those from the Michigan Assessment Consortium (MAC) Group, Performance Assessments of Social Studies Thinking (PASST) Assessment Work, and Karin Hess.

This course is entirely online, and it is designed for individuals to take at their convenience. You can enroll at any time, and once you do, an account will be created in Kent ISD's Edify tool. After that, you can move at whatever pace is suitable for your schedule and skills. A Kent ISD consultant will be available to provide support in a timely manner, and you can gain valuable tools for your teaching as well as State Continuing Education Clock Hours upon completion. This course will be online using Kent ISD's Edify tool. It will be an open entry, work at your own pace model. Within 1 business day of registration, you will receive 2 separate emails: a welcome letter from your instructor and login credentials from Edify (for new users).
